YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU ENGAGE A PIANO TECHNICIAN

YOUR PIANO'S TEMPERAMENT

Most people, even many professional pianists, do not know that each successive key on a piano is not really a half-step apart.

They are slightly more.

So if a piano is tuned matching octave to octave, the notes will become more and more flat as you play throughout the upper register, and more and more sharp as you play in the lower register.

All the while, the first octaves on either side of middle-C are supposed to be tuned in 5ths, beginning with the A below middle-C.  That's the one that's known as A-440.

And the notes that comprise the first octaves on either side of middle-C are known as the piano's TEMPERAMENT.

Properly tuning the remaining octaves is known as STRETCHING THE TEMPERAMENT.

It has been my experience that most piano technicians tune incorrectly.  They tune octave to octave rather than stretch the temperament.

And that's probably because this procedure requires great experties and a superb ear.

Our clients can be assurred that their piano will be tuned by stretching its temperament.
